MoMA, regarded as one of the world's foremost museums for contemporary art, describes Andersson's style as characterised by "brilliantly conceived tableaux, yet an essential humanity and focus on the daily lives of working-class people”. The retrospective includes Andersson's four feature films A Swedish Love Story, Giliap, Songs from the Second Floor and You, the Living alongside his student projects from the 1960s, commercials and the short films Something Happened and World of Glory. It also includes Johan Carlsson's recently completed documentary Tomorrow's Another Day, which follows the making of You, the Living. Bo Widerberg's Ådalen Riots, on which Andersson worked as the director's assistant, will also be screened. Many of the films presented have been restored by the Film Archives unit of the Swedish Film Institute.
Roy Andersson will be present in person to introduce the films.
- If anyone had told me at the start of my film career that my work would one day be screened at New York's MoMA, I would have thought they were joking. This is a great honour for me. I also think it's indicative of the scope of Swedish films and will enhance their international reputation. You, the Living, recently released in the US, has received glowing reviews.
25 US cinemas have already booked You, the Living, together with two more in Canada. The film will be shown in cities including New York, Los Angeles, Portland, Seattle, San Francisco, Nashville and Baltimore.
Roy Andersson is also currently in the news as an author. His book Our Time's Fear of Seriousness will shortly appear in a new and revised edition, published by Studio 24. The book will be available from 24 September at the Göteborg Book Fair.
