Jesper Ganslandt's feature film The Ape (Apan) has been selected for the festival's Vanguard section, which "spotlights bold filmmakers that run ahead of the pack." The film centres on Christer, a husband and father who wakes up in the aftermath of a tragedy. Much secrecy has surrounded the project, not least in the fact that the star of the film, Olle Sarri, was not even allowed to read the script!
Jesper Ganslandt has been to Toronto before: his debut film Falkenberg Farewell (Farväl Falkenberg) screened at the 2006 festival.
"Naturally, it's great to be screening The Ape in Toronto. The last time I was there with a film I was overcome by the enormity of the whole festival. I ended up only talking to the bar staff who had nothing to do with film. This time I'm planning to join in more. Maybe even dance a little," says Ganslandt.
The Ape was produced by Jesper Kurlandsky for Fasad AB and is distributed by Nordisk Film. The Swedish premiere is set for 23 October. The film was granted production funding by the Swedish Film Institute, film commissioner Peter "Piodor" Gustafsson.
As previously announced, Erik Gandini's documentary Videocracy has also been selected for the Toronto festival in the Real to Reel section.
