Film for joy and learning (pdf)
A guide into how film and media is presented in the Swedish school curriculum. And how media can be a part of the school agenda.

Film in schools – watching, analysing and making films

Through its Film in Schools initiative, the Film Institute supports film education in schools and municipalities throughout Sweden. The aim is to provide quality film experiences for children and young people, and to encourage them to deepen their knowledge of film and to express themselves through film as a medium.

In order to develop film education in schools and municipalities, the Film Institute provides funding primarily aimed at municipalities. Funding is given for the establishment and further development of various film education measures.

School Cinema

School Cinema is a key part of the initiative, enabling children and young people to see films at their local cinemas during school time. This shared cinema experience is a springboard for debate about various life issues, but also about the cinematic language used in films. The Film Institute regularly produces various guides and teaching materials for current films.

Film distribution

To ensure that a wide repertoire of suitable films is available to schools, film clubs and other screening groups, the Film Institute conducts its own film distribution. The films are largely quality productions from other film distributors which they consider have ceased to have commercial interest. These films can be booked through Filmbokningen i Rotebro.

Junior Cinema

The Film Institute selects film programmes for very young children under the Junior Cinema scheme. Each programme runs for approximately 45 minutes. Cinemas throughout the country run the programmes, which have proved to be an excellent way of introducing a new generation to watching films at the cinema.

Encouraging young talent

Children and young people are encouraged to try their hand at filmmaking on dvoted.net, a joint venture between the Film Institute and its counterparts in the other Nordic countries. On the site you can upload your own films, get help from film professionals and join online discussions with other film fans. We also support the November Festival in Trollhättan, the annual Swedish meeting place for young filmmakers. Films selected to the November Festival have made it through 19 regional qualifying rounds.

Partnership with Sweden's regions

Our film education work is carried out in close partnership with 19 regional resources centres for film and video, whose function is to provide local support for film both at school and as a leisure time activity.
