Visitors to the Polish festival will enjoy an intensive crash course in Swedish culture, with films of all shapes, sizes and genres. In addition to Burrowing (Man tänker sitt), which has been selected for the main competition, Swedish films will also be shown in various different sections.

”Poland is currently one of the most interesting markets for film in Europe, so this initiative is as much commercial as it is cultural. We are of course particularly proud that ERA New Horizons is hosting this showcase,” says Petter Mattsson, Project Manager at the Swedish Film Institute’s International Department.

The New Swedish Films section includes 13 features and 12 shorts. Features include Fredrik Edfeldt’s The Girl (Flickan) and Måns Månsson’s Mr Governor (H:r Landshövding). The children’s and youth programme will showcase 12 feature and shorts, and there will also be an animation workshop with Erling Ericsson and Alicja Jaworski. The latter has animated and directed several films about Laban the Little Ghost (Lilla spöket Laban).

A comprehensive retrospective of 26 films will celebrate the cinematic art of Jan Troell. It will include short and feature-length fiction and documentaries, and Troell himself will be visiting the festival. There will be a grand screening of Mauritz Stiller’s silent movie Sir Arne’s Treasure (Herr Arnes pengar) in the Opera house, including specially written opera music, and a tribute to Ingmar Bergman featuring a screening of Saraband and Stig Björkman’s behind-the-scenes movie Images from the Playground (Bilder från lekstugan), which screened in Cannes.

The Swedish-Polish exchange also encompasses meetings between Swedish and Polish production companies, market screenings of new Swedish films for Polish distributors and a film school collaboration. In addition there will be concerts featuring Familjen and Slagsmålsklubben, for example, and two new books on Swedish film penned specially for the occasion are also being published: Jan Troell by Professor Tadeusz Szczepanski, and New Swedish Cinema by Swedish film critic Hynek Pallas.
