The odd and swinging film by the two first time feature film directors Ola Simonsson and Johannes Stjärne Nilsson made the audience clap along with the beats during the screenings. The story follows tone deaf police officer Amadeus Warnebring’s personal vendetta with a group of drummers.
The film received production funding from the Swedish Film Institute's former film commissioner Lisa Ohlin. International sales is handled by Wild Bunch.
This is the fourth Cannes festival entry for Simonsson and Stjärne Nilsson. Their Music for One Apartment and Six Drummers (which inspired Sound of Noise) screened in main competition in 2001. It’s considered one of the most widespread short films in the world with 30 international awards and some eight million views on youtube. They were also selected for the Critics’ Week in 1996 with Nowhere Man (Bakom mahognybordet) and in 2006 with Woman and Grammophone (Kvinna vid grammofon).
Tomorrow Saturday, Sound of Noise competes for the Caméra d'Or prize, handed to the best first time director.
Wardocumentary Armadillo by Janus Metz was awarded the Critics’ Week Grand Prix prize. The film is a Danish-Swedish coproduction with funding from Swedish company Auto Images and production funding from the Swedish Film Institute's film commissioner Suzanne Glansborg.
