What is a screening week?

A week in the cinema industry does not run from Monday to Sunday. Weeks are known as screening weeks and run from Friday until the following Thursday. This is because films usually go on general release on Fridays.

What is a screening month?

A screening month runs from the last Friday of the month until the last Thursday of the following month. This is because films usually go on general release on Fridays.

What is a screening year?

A screening year runs from the last Friday of December until the last Thursday of the following December. This is because films usually go on general release on Fridays.

What is meant by a county?

In our cinema register we use the definition of Swedish counties, municipalities and localities used by Statistics Sweden. If you opt to examine a certain county you will find the accumulated statistics for the cinemas which are active there.

What is meant by title (premiere title)?

The titles in the Film Institute's cinema statistics are the premiere titles provided by the distributors of the respective films. These titles have been recorded in the Swedish Film Database.

What is meant by distributor?

The list of distributors comprises those distributors which have been active during the relevant period. The Top Films List names the distributor which has distributed the film in question during the time period specified. Sometimes a film may have had more than one distributor, in which case admissions and revenue for the film are presented for each respective distributor.

What is meant by production country?

Production country refers to the principal production country, that is the country which has contributed the most money towards the production of any given film.

What is a levy-bound/levy-exempt cinema?

The current Swedish Film Agreement requires cinema owners (organisers of cinema screenings) to pay a levy to the Film Institute equivalent to ten per cent of gross box office revenue. Cinemas that arrange no more than five screenings per week in addition to children's matinees are exempt from this levy. Thus, these cinemas are levy-exempt, whereas others are levy-bound.

What is an open screening?

An open screening is one for which tickets can be purchased by the general public as opposed to closed groups such as film clubs and companies.
